Ko Leeana Galloway ahau.

I am a 26 year old Art entrepeneur Graduated with my BA Degree in Maori Visual Arts & Design at Toihoukura- School of Maori Arts, part of EIT – Tairawhiti – Te Aho a Maui, in Gisborne. Tutored by a range of awesome kaiako (tutors) each specialising in their own areas of work and helping me throughout my journey.

Mentors: Tina Wirihana (Weaving), Derek Lardelli (Oral Histories/ Korero), Steve Gibbs(Painting), Makarini Solomon (Workshop Technician), Jo Tito (Photography/ Business Studies) as well as a range of other tutors and mentors over my 5 years of being at this Art School and I am thoroughly grateful for the opportunities and learning that has come about during my time within Toihoukura and the period thereafter.

Currently I am working part time from home in my studio, my small business – Whirinaki Works- creating artworks in preparation for Exhibition and sale.

My goals are: work towards establishing myself as an Artist by promoting and making more artworks for Exhibition and continue preparing and working on my future involved in art through education, community and iwi initiatives.

Although my Major is ‘Raranga’ (Weaving) – I do enjoy working with other mediums like Mokopu (drawing), Waituhi(painting) and Uku (clay). Some of my woven works consist of mixed media, being: Harakeke (NZ Flax), Rimu Wood, Paua (Abalone shell), thread & beads. Whereas other Kakahu (contemporary shaw) could vary from a mixture of Harakeke, Muka (flax fibre), Kiekie (Native bush plant) Copper wire & Feathers.

My work focuses on issues and korero that effect us like Tangata Whenua(people of the land), Papatuuaanuku (Mother Earth) and Te Ao Marama (The Universe) as well as my personal beliefs in topics relating to culture, heritage, history and God.

I hope you enjoy reading the update which is pretty much a resource created to inform people of what’s going on in ‘My World’ as far as Art, Art Practice, Events, Important people, subjects or sometimes just the process of creating something cool…

Thanks for stopping by.

  1. Hi Leeana! I am a 23 year old anthropology student from University College London doing research into the developing roles and functions of harakeke within Maori identity, culture and tradition today. I would love to be able to talk to you more about what harakeke means to you as a young artist. Where are you based? I am currently in New Zealand (North Island) until the end of July, and if I could meet with you (or just email if that’s more convenient) that would be fantastic! Let me know. Thanks very much 🙂 Catherine O’Riordan.
