Kawerau Weavers Hui.. Day 2, 3 highlights

Kia ora whanau,

Hope you are all well and enjoying the beautiful weather we have been blessed with today. Its been a while since i’ve put out a post due to all the major events that have happened over the past month so bear with me.

This is a follow up to the last post i put up of our trip to the Kawerau Weavers Hui, thanks to my mentor Tina Wirihana and ‘Mama’ Denise Te Hau for helping us to get there. It was a wonderful event filled with a range of people from all over the country who all brought their own style and creativity of their work to show, work or teach to others. Thank you all for the awesome opportunity to be a part of this event and admire your beautiful taonga that you shared with us.

All the ladies set up and ready for work…

Our haerenga to see Mataatua Marae restored and refurbished to its rightful place, where we spent time listening to the korero of the marae, its journey home as well as experiencing the famous lightshow which they encourage people to book in and see if you are planning on visiting Whakatane.

After our haerenga we were back to the events centre in Kawerau where all the action was happening… i thought i’d get a quick pic with this wonderful man in his ‘Rainbow Hat’ – his name: ‘Chris Bradshaw’.

He came from England with his family in 1955 and retired in Matata where he learnt Raranga and Whatu Kakaahu and then specialising in Potae – which drew me to him when i attended the last Weavers Hui two years prior. In his 93rd year arthritis limits what he can do but he still maintains a keen interest and wishes to pass on his knowledge.

The highlight of our final day: ‘The Fashion Show’.. not just any old one either – the elite wearables of both Master, Senior and Junior Weavers which followed the announcments of the elections to the committee – where Tina Wirihana was re elected to Chairperson of TRRWOA (Te Roopu Raranga Whatu o Aotearoa).
