Weavers Hui – Kawerau – Day 1, 2013

Kia ora whanau,

Hope you got those hands, minds and bodies busy, ready to finish those well overdue projects we keep delaying or just haven’t finished. Its been one of those years but hopefully with some inspiration, dedication and hard work we will achieve what we set out to do – finish some awesome works and put on a great show. Kia kaha Te Whanau o Toihoukura – we are so close to that finish line, lets make it worth it.

One event I am glad to say inspired me in many ways to work on finishing some of my muka/harakeke pieces was held two weekends ago in Kawerau – the National Weavers Hui held annually in a different location. The last was held in Kawhia (my first Weavers Hui) and the next is up north in Kaitaia.

Here are some images taken on the first day before the powhiri commenced at Rautahi Marae of our Kaiako Raranga: Tina Wirihana, her mother (a very prominent Weaver) as well as her Aunties who all wear their own symbollic Korowai/Kakahu.

I was very glad to catch up with and see Mrs Betty Brown whom I met as part of the host group of the Weavers Hui in Kawhia two years prior. She is a beautiful weaver and kaiako along with her daughter Tracey and son -in- law Pawi who welcomed us and looked after us on our stay in Kawhia. So wonderful to meet again, hopefully next time you will all be there. Till then take care. xox

Thanks for tuning in whanau – keep an eye out for my blog on day2 and 3 at the hui.

Nga mihi
Lee 🙂
